Smart Energy GB is the voice of the smart meter rollout. It’s our task to help everyone in Great Britain understand smart meters, the national rollout and how to use their new meters to get gas and electricity under control.
Smart meters explained
A smart meter is the next generation of a gas and electricity meter. They're being installed by energy suppliers in every home in England, Scotland, and Wales. Smart meters come with an in-home display screen that shows you exactly how much energy you're using in pounds and pence, in near real time and will bring an end to estimated bills.
Your energy supplier is responsible for installing your smart meter at no extra cost. If you’re the account holder who pays the energy bills, you are automatically entitled to one.
There are four easy steps to getting yours. Here’s what you need to do:-
Smart meters mean no more estimated bills, so you only pay for gas and electricity you actually use. They also help you keep track of what you’re using and how much you currently owe in pounds and pence.
How can I get a smart meter?
Every household in Britain can get a smart meter as part of the national rollout, even if you rent or are on prepay.
1. Ask your energy supplier
Contact your energy supplier or visit their website for more information about their timetables and plans. Gas and electricity suppliers are responsible for providing and fitting smart meters for everyone in Britain by 2020.
2. Fix a time and day
When your energy supplier is ready to fit your smart meter, they will call or email you to arrange a time.
3. Let your supplier in to fit the meter
A trained installer will call round to your home and install your smart meter. There should be no extra cost for the installation.
4. Start taking control of your energy use
After the installation process is complete, your trained installer can show you how your smart meter works and answer any questions.
